Mt. Calvary Missionary Baptist Church Gospel Concert
Experience an extraordinary program like no other as you immerse yourself in the soul-stirring melodies, captivating stories, heartfelt prayers, and rich history of The Mt. Calvary Missionary Baptist Church. The history of Mount Calvary Missionary Baptist Church is rooted in the rich and long history of African American churches on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. The barrier island was home to four other African American congregations, including the historic First African Baptist Church – the oldest. In 1914, under the leadership of the Rev. B. W. Williams, several members departed First African Baptist Church to organize a new congregation. Together, on March 14 of that year, they established Mount Calvary Baptist Church in its location in the Pope community of Hilton Head. Along with Rev. Williams, founding members included seven men who accepted the responsibility as church deacons: Matthew Jones, Joseph Green, Solomon Joiner, Thomas Milton, William Jones, J.W. Grant and Stephen Bryant. Other faithful members included Henry Ford Sr., James Frazier, Parris Holmes Sr., Rinah Lawyer, Josephine Jones, Mary Ford, Georgiana Barnwell, Lula Grant, Sarah Ann Joiner, Louise Williams, Jerry Barnwell, Sophie Walters, Katie Miller and Margaret Orage. Josephine Miller Jones and Katie Miller, two sisters whose family had obtained large parcels of land following slavery, donated 1.22 acres of property on Squire Pope Road for erection of the church building. Through the years, the church had a significant role in the community serving as the place for members and families to unite for religious training, worship, funerals, baptisms, marriages and church fellowship.

Immerse yourself in his exquisite art and thoughtfulness as this year's celebrated artist. Indulge in a museum-wide takeover, and basks in the brilliance of Glenn's creations.
Growing up in the small town of Dorchester, South Carolina, during the era of Jim Crow laws, Alvin’s artistic journey faced many challenges. Despite the lack of visual arts classes in his public school, Alvin’s parents arranged for him to take correspondence art courses in middle school. These early experiences ignited his passion for music, which carried through to college.
In 1979, he proudly earned my Bachelor's degree in Fine Arts from South Carolina State College, with a strong focus on education. This laid the foundation for his career as a dedicated art teacher in the Orangeburg county schools, where he served for an impressive forty-three years before retiring. Through his artwork, Alvin strives to capture the strength, dedication, and interconnectedness of the people who inspire him. Spirituality, compassion, and empathy flow through every brushstroke, creating images that resonate with viewers. After a brief period living in Orangeburg, he returned to his hometown of Dorchester in 1985. Over the years, he has had the honor of showcasing his work at various galleries throughout South Carolina, as well as briefly in North Carolina and Georgia. Some notable galleries include The Dr. N. Lee Morris Gallery, Waterfront Gallery, I.P. Stanback Museum, Penn Center, and The Columbia Museum of Art. His recognitions include winning first place at the Charleston Artist Guild Exhibit, Featured Artist for The Moja Arts Festival and Best in Show award at the Piccolo Spoleto Outdoor Art Exhibit. Today, Alvin resides in beloved Dorchester, South Carolina, enjoying the serenity of retirement after dedicating my life to teaching visual art in the public school system.

2024 Official Artwork is “Last Cast” by Alvin B. Glen
“This exhibit illustrates moments in South Carolinas’ history. Scenes of work, celebration and tragedy remind us that although most enjoy a great life. Joy is sometimes interrupted by tragedy. How do you individually respond to or react to joys and pains? Is your response genuinely yours? Or are you influenced by your audience/peers? Is your stance one of helpfulness? Do you change your response based on who is listening in the moment? When your stance is truth, fact and experience, not myth, rumor or emotion, this is the only path to positive change. We should not be as children, tossed back and forth by waves of opinion, blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of men in their deceitful scheming. Ephesians 4:14” - Alvin B Glen
