Dive into the rich and vibrant culture of the Gullah Geechee community with us at SoundWaves for the grand finale of our expanded Gullah Cultural Series! This spectacular event, titled “Why Juneteenth?”, is poised to be the highlight of the season, celebrating the newly recognized federal holiday of Juneteenth National Independence Day—a day commemorating the end of slavery in the United States.

Here's what awaits you:

Engaging Discussions | Our artistic advisor, Lavon Stevens, will be joined by two exceptional figures: Ahmad Ward, the executive director of Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park, and Bridgette Frazier, a powerhouse entrepreneur and cultural advocate. Together, they will lead a fascinating discussion on the evolution of Juneteenth from its early church-centered observances to its current status as a culturally significant celebration nationwide.

Soul-Stirring Performances | Enjoy an evening of incredible music featuring:

  • Lavon Stevens on piano

  • Clarence Williams on bass

  • Jimmy Charles on drums

  • Special performance by African drummer Abu Majed

Delectable Gullah Cuisine | Savor an authentic menu curated by Chef Bridgette Frazier of Chef B’s Eats, offering:

  • Smoked Chicken, Red Rice, Grilled Reds, and Prosperity Summer Salad

  • Vegetable Gumbo, Red Rice, and Prosperity Summer Salad (V)

  • BBQ Pork Tenderloin, Roasted Potatoes, Grilled Reds, and Prosperity Salad (GF)
