  • 840 William Hilton Parkway, Unit 2 Hilton Head Island, SC 29926 USA (map)

Join us for the Gullah Celebration, a month-long series dedicated to celebrating and promoting local Gullah and African American poets who are passionate about illuminating poetry, prose, spoken word, and other literary arts. This extraordinary poetry series features readings by exceptional published poets and emerging talents through open mic sessions. As a premier venue for poets, writers, artists, and performers, our Poetry Series offers groundbreaking, innovative, and thought-provoking work that seeks to explore fresh aesthetic, cultural, philosophical, and political perspectives in contemporary society.

Featuring Lola Campbell, when you mention the name Campbell in the Lowcountry, and you are likely to hear stories—stories of Hilton Head Island’s rich history, stories of community, of kindness, generosity, and hard work. And it is upon this foundation that Omolola “Lola” Campbell, Esq. perpetuates her family’s legacy and the Gullah heritage she credits for her strength, her character and her success. A native islander and sixth-generation Gullah person, Campbell is the daughter of the late Solomon “Sol” Campbell III and his wife Della, both of whom set a strong example of work ethic, entrepreneurship, and indefatigable faith. Her great-grandfather, Rev. Solomon Campbell, was the grandson of an enslaved man living on Hilton Head Island during the Union capture in 1861; her grandfather, Solomon Campbell, Jr. was an early craftsman of boats and homes on Hilton Head Island. With firmly established roots and an attitude of determination, Lola Campbell continues the tradition of preserving the Gullah history and culture that is so deeply ingrained in her, while embracing opportunities to raise the bar for future generations.

Felton Eaddy, poet, singer, arts educator and professor, lives in Dillon, South Carolina joins this evening’s line up. He Studied English at Claflin University, and creative writing at Johns Hopkins University. His poems have appeared in African American Review, Catalyst Magazine, Out of the Rough and Crux. Author of Bending Over to Pick up a Snake and Living by the Sword, Eaddy is a poet and teaching artist who contracts with Georgia, South Carolina, Atlanta, Fulton County, GA and Young Audiences of Atlanta as a literary artist. Professor emeritus at Clark Atlanta University, the poet founded and hosts Felton Eaddy’s Poetry Kitchen, a long-term project which features poets in performance.
